There was immense struggle but the experience gained was valuable. We all had our share of inner journeys. Now it's time to pack your bags and hit the road!

We wish you and all your loved ones a very happy new year!

Five Himalayan Lakes you must visit in the next 5 Five Himalayan Lakes you must visit in the next 5 years!

Read our previous two posts in continuation to post!

Gadsar Lake also known as Yamsar Lake
Location: Kashmir
Altitude: 11,800 ft
How to Reach: A two and a half day trek from Sonmarg
Nearest Airport: Srinagar

Kashmir is a paradise and lakes play a major role in making it one. The two famous treks, Great Lakes & Tarsar Marsar are full of deep turquoise lakes. Gadsar is situated close to the Gadsar Pass on Great Lakes Trek. An oligotrophic lake, this is number one on my list  because of its location as well as the eerie feeling it gives when you imagine it’s depth. A glacier overhangs this lake feeding it with continuous fresh water. The local folklore says this lake belongs to the God of Death, Yamraj and taking a dip in this lake can be fatal for no apparent reason. A myth still unresolved. Well, I obviously didn’t take a chance as there were many other lakes to take a dip in.

Chandratal Location: Himachal Pradesh Altitude: 14 Chandratal
Location: Himachal Pradesh
Altitude: 14,100 ft
How to Reach: Nearest road head is 2 kms away.
Nearest Airport: Kullu

A world heritage site, Chandratal is a trekker’s paradise in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. It literally translates to “Lake of the Moon” because of its crescent shape. In summers, tourists come here in huge numbers and it’s full of colourful flowers carpeted across the plateau. You can reach Spiti valley either from Shimla, the state capital, or from Manali, via the Rohtang Pass. Be prepared for a journey that will shake you to the bones as there are no proper roads. But the ride is worth all the hardships because once you are at the lake, you will not believe that a lake so beautiful exists. Take a nap or short walk to shake off the tiredness and then sip in the beauty slowly.

Pangong
Location: Leh
Altitude: 14,000 ft
How to Reach: 5 hours treacherous drive from Leh
Nearest Airport: Leh

Pangong Tso is an endorheic lake in Ladakh situated at 13,862 ft. It is 134 km long and extends from India to Tibet. This lake will literally take your breath away, so take care not to get too worked up. Let the reality sink in, that a lake so magnificent is accessible so easily and that you don’t have to trek anywhere to get to it. You get a feeling of looking at a painting as clouds float by with a backdrop of the mighty Himalayas. It’s interesting to know that a part of the lake is saline while another is fresh. The lake lies directly on the Actual Line of Control. During winters parts of the lake are frozen stiff and one can even drive a vehicle on the ice.
Mansarovar Location: Tibet Altitude: 15,060 ft How Mansarovar
Location: Tibet
Altitude: 15,060 ft
How to Reach: Via Nepal is most convenient
Nearest Airport: Kathmandu

In the backyard of Shiva’s abode, lies Mansarovar, the holiest of all lakes as per Sanatan belief. Overlooking Mansarovar is the Kailash Parvat, Home to Lord Shiva. For most this is a journey like no other. At 15,060 ft it is for those who have the unshakable faith in the Divine, that there is nothing more to life than getting a glimpse of Kailash & Mansarovar. It is this faith that takes them through the difficulties of this arduous journey. Taking a dip in the holy waters is believed to cleans all the sins and freed from the cycle of births. Journey to Kailsh Mansarovar takes a number of days and requires permits from the Chinese embassy. The journey isn’t easy but every step gives you strength to complete it.

Gurudongmar Lake
Location: Sikkim
Altitude: 16,909 ft
How to Reach: 190 kms from Gangtok
Nearest Airport: Siliguri

Gurudongmar Lake is situated 190 kilometres away from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim and very close to the China border. It is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. The lake is fed by the glaciers and the source of the Teesta River. The lake is completely frozen in the winters. There’s an interesting folklore related to the Lake. Guru Padmasambhava was returning from Tibet and passed by the lake. Because it was frozen, people of the region had no access to the water of the lake. So they prayed to the Guru to help them. Guru Padmasambhava then touched a part of the lake with his hand and that little part stopped freezing during the winters. The locals were happy as they had now water in the winters and since then the lake has been considered sacred. It is indeed one of the lifetime experiences that you can’t afford to miss if you visit Sikkim.
